Protecting Florida for the Future

Editorial: Scott meets scientists

Gov. Rick Scott sat down with the scientists. We commend the governor for finally meeting with some of Florida’s brightest minds on the threat of human-induced climate change and sea level rise. But we’re disappointed to hear that the scientists left the meeting, well, disappointed.

As reported by the Miami Herald’s Mary Ellen Klas, David Hastings, professor of marine science and chemistry at Eckerd College said after the meeting “There was no acknowledgment of the issue nor was there any reflection of the seriousness of the issue. I’m concerned he might not do anything.”

For a governor who’s so comfortable admitting that he’s “not a scientist,” he really ought to be taking the professionals more seriously. These men were not in the Capitol pushing political agendas. They were there doing what they are highly trained to do.
